St Michaels Remuera

Completed in 1933, St Michael’s church was blessed and opened to the public on the 1st of October that year. The Church was built to replace a multi-purpose hall in Middleton Road that had been in use since 1894, and which previously served as the Parish Church, as part of the original school and convent complex.

Designed by Auckland architects Tole and Massey, the new church has been described as a magnificent example of full-blown Romanesque revival, with some Italianate touches such as a loggia-topped bell-tower. The design has been widely admired and was awarded the 1933 Gold Medal of the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

While we are very blessed to have such a beautiful church, what really matters is that it provides a welcoming place of worship, where the community can gather to celebrate Mass and the Sacraments. Part of this community includes the families with children who attend the adjacent St Michael’s Catholic School.

The bonds between the school and parish are strong, and the whole St Michael’s Community is warm and welcoming to all who wish to attend.

You are very welcome to join us at Mass on Sunday.

It is good to belong!
